Akai Pro MPC Renaissance and Studio - Syncing with Pro Tools in Standalone Mode

akai mpc all main blackThe MPC software can easily be used as a plugin inside Pro Tools, but you can also sync both applications while the MPC software is in standalone mode.  The following will show you how to use Pro Tools as the slave and as the master using MIDI Time Code.

Mac OS X

    Setting Up Mac's IAC Bus for MIDI 

    If you have not previously set up Mac's IAC bus to send MMC control for plugin use, make sure to follow the instructions found through MPC Plugin > Preferences > Help > Set Up MMC Control. This same bus can be used to send MTC (MIDI Time Code) between applications.

    MPC Software as Master - Pro Tools as Slave

    MPC Software Settings

    In MPC Software's MPC > Preferences > Sync menu, choose MIDI Time Code(MTC) from the Send drop down while selecting IAC Driver MPC MMC as the To port.

    Pro Tools Settings

    In Pro Tools' Setup > Peripherals... > Synchronization menu, select the IAC (MPC MMC) virtual bus under MTC Reader Port

    On the Pro Tools transport, select the Offline logo.  This can be found at the top or bottom of your session view.  This puts Pro Tools in external sync mode.   

    Top:

    Bottom:

    Press play in the MPC Software. You are now synchronized via MIDI Time Code. 

     

     

    Pro Tools as Master - MPC Software as Slave

    Pro Tools Settings

    In Pro Tools' Setup > Peripherals... > Synchronization menu, select the IAC (MPC MMC) virtual bus under MTC Generator Port.

    On the Pro Tools transport, select the GEN MTC to generate MIDI Time Code.

    MPC Software Settings

    In MPC Software's MPC > Preferences > MIDI menu, select the IAC Driver MPC MMC virtual port as an active MIDI input.

    Now move to the Sync tab and choose MIDI Time Code(MTC) in the Receive drop-down.

    Press play in Pro Tools.  You are now synchronized via MIDI Time Code. 

     

     

     

    Windows

    Note: Windows does not come with a native virtual MIDI driver, like Mac's IAC Bus.  A popular third party software that can be used for virtual MIDI patching is called MIDI Yoke.
