Frequently Asked Questions

The KICK DRUM is hard to hear on my speakers. It’s better on headphones, though. What can I do?

The Rhythm Wolf kick drum is capable of some very deep bass tones; so deep that some smaller desktop speakers will not be able to reproduce them! If you did not have a subwoofer or a set of headphones to use with your Rhythm Wolf, you can make the KICK DRUM play some higher, punchier tones by turning the TUNE, and ATTACK knobs up.

Why does the BASS SYNTH get quieter as I turn up the FILTER RES knob?

The Rhythm Wolf BASS SYNTH uses a Low Pass Filter. Naturally, these filters remove high frequencies as you turn down the FILTER CUTOFF knob. FILTER RES (Resonance) accentuates different parts of this filter so you can get a wide variety of tones from your Rhythm Wolf’s synth.

At extremely high settings, the FILTER RES knob will seemingly reduce the volume of the BASS SYNTH tone. This is normal and was designed specifically to allow for a very musical interaction between the BASS SYNTH filter and the HOWL knob. Experiment with different combinations of filter settings along with the HOWL and come up with your own signature tone!

Sometimes my Rhythm Wolf goes a little sharp or flat. Is this normal?

This is absolutely normal.  The Akai Rhythm Wolf is a fully analog instrument - like a piano or guitar - and will act in a similar manner.  For example, we recommend letting the Rhythm Wolf warm up for a few minutes in order to ensure the best sound and responsiveness.  Also, if you play at a higher register and at extreme settings, the pitch scaling could also be slightly sharp or flat.

Why can't I hear the BASS SYNTH?

If the SYNTH OUT is not connected to anything, the MAIN OUT will include the drum and bass synth voices. If a cable is connected to the SYNTH OUT, the MAIN OUT will include the drum voices only.  In other words, the bass synth voice is sent through SYNTH OUT only if a cable is connected to it.  Otherwise, the bass synth voice is sent to the MAIN OUT.

Be sure that you have correctly connected the MAIN OUT and SYNTH OUT.  If you have connected your headphones directly to the MAIN OUT, and want to hear the BASS SYNTH, ensure that nothing is connected to the SYNTH OUT port.

Can I record my audio directly to the computer with a USB cable?

The USB connection is specifically for transferring MIDI and timing information between the computer and the Rhythm Wolf only.
