Why can I only hear one side?

The Alto TS112W, TS115W and Trouper speakers are all designed to playback a mono audio signal when used alone, even when sending it a stereo source through Bluetooth. Instead of summing, or combining, the two sides of your stereo signal, the speaker will simply default to the left side of the signal. The added benefit here is that you can wirelessly link a second speaker of the same model and the right side of your stereo signal will be automatically sent to this second speaker, giving you a full stereo sound.

If you are only using one speaker, working this way may not be ideal, but you can work around this by setting your phone, tablet or other Bluetooth device to playback in mono, effectively summing the signal before it gets sent out to the speaker. This is usually very simple and quick to turn off when necessary.

Setting Your iOS Device to Mono Audio Playback

  1. Find and select your Settings app
  2. Select the General menu

  3. Select the Accessibility menu

  4. Click on the switch icon next to Mono Audio to turn the setting on

Your device will now combine the left and right sides of your stereo music and send them to your Bluetooth speaker as a single mono signal. Keep in mind, this will be applied to all audio coming out of your device including any built-in speakers or headphone/speaker outputs, so remember to turn this off if you need a stereo signal for other purposes.

Setting Your Mac to Mono Audio Playback

  1. Navigate to your System Preferences
  2. Find and select the Accessibility menu

  3. Select Audio from the list on the left
  4. Check off the box for "Play stereo audio as mono"

As on your iOS device, this will affect all audio output for your entire system, including any built-in speakers and anything attached to the headphone output.

Setting Your Android Device to Mono Audio Playback

  1. Navigate to your Settings
  2. Find and select the Accessibility menu

  3. Select Hearing

  4. Find the option for Mono Audio and turn this on

This will again apply to all audio playing from your device, including built-in speakers and the headphone output.
