MPC Series - Syncing your MPC With Pro Tools

akai mpc all all mainThe MPC series of drum machines are powerful sequencers in their own right. Additional capability can be added to our MPC when used in conjunction with your favorite DAW. The following guide will show you how to use your MPC as both a master and slave device with Pro Tools.

MPC500 as Slave/Pro Tools as Master

Using MIDI Beat Clock

Connect a MIDI output of your computer/interface to a MIDI input on your MPC. 

  1. On the MPC500 press the Mode button + PAD 7.

  2. Turn the data wheel to display Sync.

  3. Press the DOWN cursor button and use the data wheel to change the sync mode to Slave.

  4. Set your desired tempo in Pro Tools.

  5. In Pro Tools, go to the Setup menu and choose MIDI > MIDI BEAT CLOCK

  6. Check the boxes for Enable MIDI Beat Clock and the MIDI output you want to send the signal through.

  7. Press Play on your Pro Tools transport. Congratulations! Your MPC500 should now be playing in sync with Pro Tools. NOTE: The MPC will not start with Pro Tools unless there is a loaded sequence containing at least 1 bar.

MPC1000 as Slave/Pro Tools as Master

Using MIDI Beat Clock

Connect a MIDI output of your computer/interface to a MIDI input on your MPC.

  1. On the MPC1000, press the Mode button + PAD 9

  2. Press [F2] for Sync.

  3. Set the Sync In to whichever MIDI input you wish to use.

  4. Turn Sync Out OFF.

  5. Set your desired tempo in Pro Tools.

  6. In Pro Tools, go to the Setup menu and choose MIDI > MIDI BEAT CLOCK.

  7. Check the boxes for Enable MIDI Beat Clock and the MIDI output you want to send the signal through.

  8. Press Play on your Pro Tools transport. Congratulations! Your MPC500 should now be playing in sync with Pro Tools. NOTE: The MPC will not start with Pro Tools unless there is a loaded sequence containing at least 1 bar.

MPC2500 & MPC5000 as Master/Pro Tools as Slave

Using MTC & MMC

Connect a MIDI output of your MPC to a MIDI input on your computer/interface. 

  1. In Pro Tools go to the Setup menu and choose Peripherals

  2. Click on the Synchronization tab and make sure MTC Reader Port is set to Any.

  3. Click OK.

  4. Press the Online button on your Pro Tools transport. It is located on the far left of the transport and also in the middle. Both buttons will flash blue once pressed.

  5. On your MPC go to the MIDI/Sync menu. 

  6. Set the Sync Out to the MIDI output port you are using on your MPC. 

  7. Set Mode to MIDI Time Code

  8. Set Frame Rate to 30

  9. Set Send MMC to ON.

  10. Press Play on the MPC. Congratulations! Pro Tools should now be playing along with your MPC.

MPC2500 & MPC5000 as Slave/Pro Tools as Master

Using MTC & MMC

Connect a MIDI output of your computer/interface to a MIDI input on your MPC.

  1. On your MPC go to the MIDI/Sync menu.

  2. Set the Sync In to the MIDI input port you are using on your MPC.

  3. Set Mode to MIDI Time Code.

  4. Set Receive MMC to ON.

  5. Set the tempo of your MPC sequence to match the tempo of your Pro Tools session. 

  6. In Pro Tools go to the Setup menu and choose Peripherals

  7. Click on the Synchronization tab and set MTC Generator Port to the MIDI output that is connected to the input of your MPC.

  8. Go to the Setup menu and choose Session. Set the Timecode Rate to 30.

  9. On your Pro Tools transport make sure that the GEN MTC button is pressed.

  10. Press Play in your Pro Tool session. Your MPC should now be playing along with Pro Tools!

Using MIDI Beat Clock & MMC

Connect a MIDI output of your computer/interface to a MIDI input on your MPC.

  1. On your MPC go to the MIDI/Sync menu.

  2. Set the Sync In to the MIDI input port you are using on your MPC.

  3. Set Mode to MIDI Clock.

  4. Set Receive MMC to ON.

  5. In Pro Tools, go to the Setup menu and choose MIDI > MIDI BEAT CLOCK.

  6. Check the boxes for Enable MIDI Beat Clock and the MIDI output you want to send the signal through.
